South Korea's Pohang Steel and Samsung SDI to build cathode copper plant in Chile


Seoul, March 11: South Korea’s POSCO and Samsung’s battery manufacturer Samsung SDI plan to build a cathode copper plant in Chile in 2021. The project cost USD 54.02 million. The output is approximately 3,200 tons of copper cathode/year and is expected to be put into operation in the second half of 2021.


The lithium battery factory, which is mainly supplied to South Korea, is used to produce lithium batteries for electric vehicles.


With the development of the electric vehicle industry, the demand for cathode copper in the lithium battery industry for electric vehicles will also increase.


According to the report, it is expected that by 2021, such cathode copper demand will increase by a factor of four to 860,000 tons.
